The Town of Lexington announced that, effective Sept. 1, 2026, residents are responsible for the cost of disposing of certain waste items that are not accepted as regular trash under MassDEP Waste Disposal Bans.

Fees include $49.50 for mattresses or box springs, $44 for appliances containing Freon such as refrigerators and air conditioners, $27.50 for appliances without Freon such as washing machines and dishwashers, $28.60 for small electronics up to 24 inches, and $53.90 for larger electronics. Large scrap metal items, including snowblowers, lawnmowers and grills, can be collected at no charge. The town said the fees cover collection and disposal costs and are "not set to create a revenue stream for the Town."

Residents can schedule and pay for collections through a new tab in the town's LexSortSmart tool, available online at lexingtonma.gov/trash or as a free app on the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. Appliances, electronics and scrap metal are picked up on Wednesdays, with requests due by the preceding Friday at noon. Mattresses and box springs are picked up every other Friday, with requests due by the preceding Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Cancellations and refunds cannot be processed through LexSortSmart; residents seeking a refund must email solidwaste@lexingtonma.gov, and refunds may take three to four weeks to arrive by mailed check.

The town noted no-cost alternatives, including asking appliance vendors about disposal when replacing an item, and Mass Save's appliance recycling program, which offers rebates and free pickup for old refrigerators, freezers and dehumidifiers.

Lexington also created a Waste Fee Hardship Program that waives disposal fees for qualifying residents who meet income guidelines under the Massachusetts Home Energy Assistance Program or who have a medical condition or disability requiring more frequent disposal. Residents can apply online or by calling Human Services at (781) 698-4840.
