Lexington's West Nile Virus Risk Raised to Moderate
Massachusetts health officials have raised Lexington's West Nile virus risk level to moderate after detecting the virus in neighboring communities, prompting the town to renew calls for residents to guard against mosquito bites as the summer wears on.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health notified Lexington on July 24 that West Nile virus had been found in nearby towns, elevating the mosquito-borne illness risk level to moderate. Town officials pointed residents to the state's mosquito-borne illness information page and the standard precautions: draining standing water around homes, using insect repellent, and wearing long sleeves during peak mosquito hours at dawn and dusk.
Separately, Town Hall served notice of a coming change to trash service. Beginning September 1, 2026, residents will be responsible for the disposal cost of certain special-collection waste items that are not accepted as regular trash, a shift driven by MassDEP waste disposal bans. The town has posted details of the new program on its website ahead of the fall start date.
