Lexington Sets Fees for Special Waste, Unveils LexSortSmart Tool
DATELINE — LEXINGTON Starting September 1, Lexington residents will pay out of pocket to dispose of certain waste items that fall outside standard trash pickup, the town announced this week, timed alongside the launch of a new online sorting guide called LexSortSmart.
TOWN HALL The Department of Public Works said the new special-collection fees apply to items not accepted as regular trash under MassDEP's waste disposal bans, part of a broader push to modernize how the town handles waste ahead of a larger collection-program overhaul planned for summer 2027. Alongside the fee change, the town introduced LexSortSmart, a new tool meant to help residents figure out what can be recycled, composted, or specially collected.
Separately, the town is accepting applications through Monday, August 31, for residents interested in serving on a town board or committee, with a range of current and upcoming openings listed on the town website.
The Select Board's hybrid public hearing on the culvert lining project, first flagged earlier this month, is set for Monday, a story the town's News Flash also covered today.
SCHOOLS The School Building Committee's remote meeting, with an agenda revised August 13, is scheduled for Monday afternoon; no new district policy announcements accompanied the posting.
COMMUNITY & ARTS Lexington's 2026 Summer Concert Series continues Friday, August 21, with a performance by Mojo Ride, the latest date added to the town's outdoor summer concert lineup.
