Lexington Sets Sept. 1 Fees For Special Waste Pickup Items

LEXINGTON — Lexington residents will begin paying new disposal fees for certain non-trash waste items starting Tuesday, September 1, part of a broader overhaul of the town's waste collection system that also includes a new online sorting tool.

TOWN HALL Starting September 1, residents will be responsible for the cost of disposing of certain items that are not accepted as regular trash, in keeping with MassDEP Waste Disposal Bans, according to the town. The change comes as the town separately prepares a modernized, town-wide waste collection program set to roll out in the summer of 2027, an effort officials say is meant to control rising costs and cut down on waste.

To help residents navigate the new rules, the town has also rolled out LexSortSmart, a new tool intended to answer questions about waste collection and disposal procedures across Lexington.

In other town news, Melissa Battite, Lexington's director of Recreation & Community Programs, has been elected a Fellow of the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration, one of the field's highest professional honors, the town announced.

Residents looking to lower their energy bills can now book a 20-minute session with Yahan Hua, Lexington's new Energy Advocate, through a town appointment portal.
