Board of Appeals · Meeting of October 8, 2026
Lexington's Board of Appeals continued a side-yard setback variance hearing for an accessible garage at 213 East Street to October 22. Applicant Malik Srivatsan asked to build a 16-foot-wide, ADA-compliant one-car garage with a second-floor addition connected to the master bedroom, saying it would serve his wife's father, who is in his 90s with limited mobility. Board member James Austin pushed back on the upper-level addition, saying "we haven't established that there's no other way to build the addition on top of the garage," and the board declined to take a non-binding straw vote Vice Chair Niles Varnes proposed on the design.
The board voted 5-0 to continue the hearing so Srivatsan can supply elevation drawings and consider shrinking the second floor. Members also approved, 5-0, the September 24 meeting minutes. The matter is also tied to a related Conservation Commission hearing continued to October 28.
