Historic Districts Commission · Meeting of August 6, 2026

Lexington's Monroe Center for the Arts withdraws its front-yard pavilion plan after commission pushback. The Historic Districts Commission, chaired by Leigh Noel Chase, heard nearly two hours of public comment on the 1403 Massachusetts Avenue proposal, with neighbor Doug McDonald citing 42 letters of opposition against 35 letters of support cited by the applicant. Commissioners Dan Heisel, Scott Cooper, Paul O'Shaughnessy and Dr.

Bob Bellinger all said the reduced 2,800-square-foot, 120-seat canopy still "dominates" the historic building's facade; Heisel called it "a wonderful project in the wrong place." Applicant Christina Burwell withdrew the application rather than face a vote, with plans to redesign toward the rear lot. In earlier hearings, the commission also continued dumpster-enclosure and storefront-window applications tied to a new restaurant at 1775 Massachusetts Avenue and 7 Depot Square, approved a driveway repaving at 1 Locust Avenue, and denied printed construction banners at 1906 Massachusetts Avenue while allowing blank fabric screening.
