Historic Districts Commission · Meeting of October 1, 2026

Lexington Historic Districts Commission chair reveals guidelines can be waived at will. Chair Anne Eccles told commissioners town counsel advised that HDC design guidelines, unlike its enabling legislation, "can be waived at the discretion of the commission" — or even the chair alone — calling the news that she could act unilaterally something that "blew my mind." The commission unanimously approved signage at 1666 Massachusetts Avenue and 36 Bedford Street, where a Stop & Shop sign was cut from roughly 36 feet to 31 feet and switched to halo lighting, plus window replacement at 15 Hancock Street. A second sign at 25 Depot Square was continued to November after Commissioner Scott Cooper warned it "borders on advertising" and "sets a precedent we don't want to set"; only the applicant's door decal was approved.

At 4 Muzzey Street, commissioners required wood clapboard over a proposed PVC composite, citing a hardship exception previously granted only at the 50-unit 16 Clark Street development, and deferred a final paint-color vote to November.
