HIGH SCHOOL
Lexington High School's unified basketball team opened its season with full participation after district officials reworked the roster following student advocacy, School Committee members said at their Sept. 29 meeting. When the town's two middle-school unified programs merged at the high school level, organizers initially had to limit how many students could play, a decision that drew about 20 students to a recent School Committee meeting to speak in favor of full inclusion. One committee member said Superintendent Julie Hackett's team "went back and the next day they did some rearranging of things and every student who wanted to participate in basketball was allowed to participate." The team won its season opener at Arlington and played its first home game against Melrose this week. The committee said additional unified basketball games are open for the public to attend.
Lexington High School's unified basketball team will hold a car wash fundraiser Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lexington High School, School Committee members announced.
Separately, the Lexington School Building Committee heard Sept. 28 that construction crews are working on the new high school's skate park and throwing cage areas, with installation of building support piles expected to begin mid to late October.
